Marcin Łukasz Żebrowski, MSc, a doctoral candidate from the Department of Hydrobiology, Institute of Ecology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, spoke at TEDx University of Warsaw “MIND THE CHANGE. What drives science?”, an event held at the University of Warsaw Library.

In his talk “Life revolves around microplastics”, he discussed one of the most important challenges in contemporary aquatic ecology: microplastic pollution. These tiny plastic particles can affect not only individual organisms, but also relationships between species and the functioning of entire ecosystems.

The talk focused on research into water fleas, small planktonic crustaceans that play an important role in aquatic environments. Marcin Żebrowski explained how the presence of microplastics may alter interspecific competition and why both conventional and biodegradable plastics matter.
