The first Warsaw edition of City Nature Challenge is behind us

From 24 to 27 April 2026, the first Warsaw edition of City Nature Challenge (CNC) took place — an international citizen science initiative in which participants document wild nature using the iNaturalist app.

More than 150 people took part in the event, collecting a total of 3,368 observations of plants, animals, fungi and other organisms found in Warsaw. This is a very good result, showing strong interest in urban nature.

The event was coordinated by people affiliated with the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw: Michał Kochanowski, MSc; dr hab. Julia Pawłowska; Dr Igor Siedlecki; Nadiia Skobel; Ignacy Stadnicki; and Dr Marta Tischer.

However, collecting observations does not mark the end of the activities carried out as part of CNC Warsaw 2026. The next stage involves identifying and verifying the collected data. Verified observations may be submitted to open biodiversity databases, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), where they can be used by scientists, naturalists and people involved in nature conservation.

The organisers are also planning further activities aimed at developing the Warsaw City Nature Challenge community, including summarising the results, staying in touch with participants and developing the CNC Warsaw profile.

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the walks, added observations, helped identify species and supported the organisation of the event.
