Special issue of the journal KOSMOS titled “Microcosm – issues in microbiological sciences” now available in print
04 03 2026
In January 2026, a printed special issue of the journal KOSMOS. Problemy Nauk Biologicznych, published by the Polish Copernicus Society of Naturalists, was released, titled “Microcosm – issues in microbiological sciences”, edited by Dr hab. Tomasz Jagielski, Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Institute of Microbiology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw.
This volume (Vol. 73, No. 3) is devoted to the “microcosm”, the world of microorganisms understood as a vast and complex ecosystem of microbes, their environments, and interactions. The collected articles present the diversity of bacteria, fungi, and protists, as well as, separately, phages, and highlight how strongly the microbiome influences human functioning.
The issue consists of review papers from various branches of microbiology (including medical, environmental, industrial, food, and veterinary microbiology), prepared largely by early-career researchers in collaboration with experts.
The special issue includes articles by researchers from our Faculty:
-
350 years of microorganisms through the lens – in memory of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the “father of microbiology” – Dr hab. Tomasz Jagielski (Institute of Microbiology)
-
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria and their environmental reservoir – MSc Paulina Joanna Wójtowicz, Dr Zofia Bakuła, Dr hab. Tomasz Jagielski (Institute of Microbiology)
-
Malassezia microfungi – your companions from the cradle to the grave – Dr hab. Mariusz Dyląg (Institute of Microbiology)
-
Do fungi have their own microbiome? On bacteria living inside fungal hyphae – Dr Alicja Okrasińska, MSc Beniamin Abramczyk, Dr hab. Julia Pawłowska (Institute of Evolutionary Biology)
-
Stronger together – symbioses in the world of microorganisms – MSc Marta Sałek, MSc Małgorzata Chwalińska, Dr hab. Anna Karnkowska, Prof. (University of Warsaw) (Institute of Evolutionary Biology)
We encourage you to explore this KOSMOS issue, especially the articles by our researchers.
The printed edition is available in the Faculty of Biology Library, and the electronic version is available online at: https://kosmos.ptpk.org/index.php/Kosmos
