Prof. Sabina Pierużek-Nowak – a finalist of the Popularyzator Nauki competition in the Scientist category

Prof. Sabina Pierużek-Nowak has become a finalist of the 21st edition of the nationwide Popularyzator Nauki (Science Populariser) competition in the Scientist category. This prestigious distinction is awarded to individuals and institutions who passionately bring science closer to the public, inspire curiosity about the world, and help others better understand the phenomena that shape our lives.
Prof. Sabina Pierużek-Nowak, is a biologist, an associate professor at the University of Warsaw, and president of the Association for Nature “Wolf” (Stowarzyszenie dla Natury „Wilk”). For over 30 years, she has been conducting research on wolves, focusing on their ecology, behaviour, recolonisation dynamics of new areas, and the genetic structure of populations. In the 1990s, she was actively involved in efforts to grant species protection to wolves and lynxes and to expand the Białowieża National Park.
Prof. Pierużek-Nowak is deeply engaged in activities for the protection of large carnivores and their habitats, the creation of ecological corridors and wildlife crossings, as well as in developing solutions to reduce conflicts between humans and predators. She is the author of dozens of scientific papers and numerous popular science publications. For many years, she has been passionately popularising knowledge about ecology and wildlife conservation through lectures, podcasts, radio and television appearances, and active communication in social media, where she shares her expertise and enthusiasm with a wide audience.
The Popularyzator Nauki competition is organised by Nauka w Polsce, a science communication service published by the Polish Press Agency Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The aim of the competition is to recognise individuals and institutions who make outstanding contributions to promoting science in society.
In this year’s 21st edition, 76 entries were submitted, out of which 24 finalists were selected across five categories: Animator, Institution, Media, Scientist, and Team. The winners will be announced in the first half of December 2025.
