Nature Conservation – a degree programme combining science, fieldwork and law

How can species, ecosystems and landscapes be effectively protected? How can nature inventories be conducted, environmental data interpreted and legal regulations applied in practice? These questions are addressed by the Nature Conservation degree programme offered by the Faculty of Biology at the University of Warsaw.

The Nature Conservation programme was launched in the 2025/2026 academic year. It is an interdisciplinary, three-year first-cycle degree programme combining biology with environmental science, geography, spatial planning and law. It is designed for people who are interested in nature, want to understand how ecosystems function and would like to gain practical skills needed for their protection.

During the programme, students learn to identify plant, animal and fungal species, conduct field research and nature inventories, analyse environmental data and use GIS, statistics and selected molecular biology methods. They also study nature conservation law, administrative procedures and methods of planning conservation measures. Laboratories, workshops and field classes give students the opportunity to work with real examples of species and ecosystem protection. Some classes are co-taught by experts and practitioners from Polish nature conservation organisations and institutions.

Graduates may work in consulting companies, design offices, public administration, national and landscape parks, non-governmental organisations, environmental laboratories, research institutes and environmental education centres. They are also prepared to continue their education at Master’s level. The programme offers an optional teacher training module.

The video features students of the Faculty of Biology UW representing the Faculty Student Council: Ignacy Przybyłowski, Michał Dybczyński and Zuzia Sulej. It also features Marcin Żebrowski, MSc, a doctoral researcher at the Department of Hydrobiology and Head of the Promotion Office of the Faculty of Biology UW.

The video was produced by the Digital Competence Centre of the University of Warsaw, and its academic content was reviewed by the coordinators of the Nature Conservation programme. One of the subjects used in the admission process may be Biology, Geography or Civics. Applications for the 2026/2027 academic year are open until 9 July 2026.
