Marta Sałek in the FameLab Poland 2026 Final
19 06 2026
Marta Sałek, MSc Eng., a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, took part in the FameLab Poland 2026 final, held on 9 June in Katowice. During her final presentation, she spoke about the relationships between protists, which are unicellular eukaryotic organisms, and bacteria in freshwater ecosystems and explained how conditions in lakes may shape these interactions.
FameLab is an international science communication competition in which participants have three minutes to present a selected research topic in English without using a multimedia presentation. The presentations are assessed in terms of content, clarity and charisma.
Marta Sałek is preparing her doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Anna Karnkowska, PhD, DSc, Associate Professor. Her research focuses on the diversity and ecology of protists, as well as their interactions with bacteria. In her work, she analyses freshwater microbial communities and investigates how they change under the influence of factors such as eutrophication, the enrichment of water with nutrients.
The final presentation provided an opportunity to introduce her research to a wider audience in a concise, accessible and engaging form.
Tomas Senda, MSc, from the Linguistic Engineering Team at NASK – National Research Institute, took first place in the competition. Dagmara Stasiowska, PhD Eng., from the Faculty of Space Technologies at AGH University of Krakow, came second, while Piotr Falkowski, PhD Eng., from the Łukasiewicz Research Network – Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements PIAP, took third place.
