City Nature Challenge in Warsaw: 24–27 April
20 04 2026
From 24 to 27 April 2026, Warsaw will join the City Nature Challenge, an event focused on finding, photographing, and recording wild plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms and identifying them with the iNaturalist app.
City Nature Challenge is an international citizen science initiative in which people document urban wildlife in their surroundings. Besides being an enjoyable way to spend time outdoors and learn more about nature, the project also helps create biodiversity data sets that can be used by scientists to better understand and protect urban nature.
The project began in 2016 as a friendly competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco. In 2017, it expanded across the United States, and since 2018 it has become an international event. In 2026, for the first time, the challenge will also include Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
As part of the Warsaw edition, special nature walks with naturalist are planned, offering an extra opportunity to discover some of the city’s most interesting natural areas. The Warsaw edition of the project is coordinated by researchers from Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw: Michał Kochanowski, Dr hab. Julia Pawłowska, Dr Igor Siedlecki, Nadiia Skobel, Ignacy Stadnicki, and Dr Marta Tischer.
According to the official schedule, the observation period of CNC 2026 will take place on 24–27 April 2026, and the uploading and identification period will continue from 28 April to 10 May 2026.
