Microfluidics Workshop during the 9th Congress of the Polish Pharmaceutical Students’ Association

On September 12, 2025, during the 9th PTSF Congress “Microbiota – a Target of Modern Pharmacotherapy”, a workshop entitled “Microfluidic Technology in Microbiome Research” was held. It was conducted by Dr. Adam Pyzik, Dr. Alicja Przybyszewska-Podstawka, and Dr. Marcin Maćkiewicz from the Department of Molecular Biology, University of Warsaw, at the invitation of the UW Student Scientific Society of Microbiology, the Department of Medical Microbiology, and the Polish Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (PTSF).

The workshop offered a comprehensive introduction to the basics of microfluidics. Pharmacy students had the opportunity to independently prepare microfluidic chips, create and observe under a microscope microfluidic systems with bacteria, as well as learn about encapsulation techniques. This gave them insight into the possibilities that high-throughput technologies open up for microbiome research.

Research carried out by the aforementioned scientists from the Department of Molecular Biology, University of Warsaw, focuses on exploring the biodiversity of microbial consortia and their adaptive capacities in specific environmental conditions. Their projects combine microfluidic methods with advanced sequencing techniques and classical microbiology. The results are applicable in such areas as biogas production, bioremediation, studies on heavy metal resistance, and biodiversity conservation.
