Dr Takao Ishikawa on Radio Naukowe
18 03 2026
On 26 February 2026, an interview with Dr Takao Ishikawa was published on the Radio Naukowe YouTube channel. Dr Ishikawa works at the Institute of Bioengineering, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, and also serves as Vice-Dean for Student Affairs.
In the interview, Karolina Głowacka talked with Dr Takao Ishikawa about proteins, which are key structural and functional components of every organism. Because of their wide variety of forms, proteins perform many important roles in biological processes. They catalyse metabolic reactions, take part in cell signalling, and are involved in the body’s immune response.
Although proteins in all organisms are made from the same 20 amino acids, the huge number of possible combinations and three-dimensional arrangements means that they can take on an enormous, almost unlimited, number of forms and perform very different functions. These range from insulin, a small protein made of 51 amino acids that regulates blood glucose levels, to titin, a giant protein made of more than 35,000 amino acids that helps stabilise skeletal muscles during contraction.
The interview also covered diseases related to the incorrect formation of proteins, as well as pathogenic infectious proteins known as prions.
