Another MINIATURA NCN grants for our researchers!
26 11 2025
We are proud to announce that dr Małgorzata Orłowska and dr Mikołaj Dziurzyński, from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology, Faculty of Biology UW, have received funding from the National Science Centre for the implementation of preliminary research under the MINIATURA 9 call.
Dr Małgorzata Orłowska received funding of PLN 49,500 for the project titled “Adaptation of the Glycan-seq method to study glycan diversity in multicellular bacteria.”
The aim of her research is to adapt the innovative Glycan-seq method for analysing glycans on the cell surface of the cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme. By modifying the set of lectins through conjugation with short oligonucleotide fragments and adjusting the procedure to the specific features of the studied bacteria, it will be possible to perform high-throughput analysis of their glycome. Surface sugar structures in such organisms are still poorly understood, even though they play key roles in intercellular communication and may provide valuable insights into the evolution of multicellularity.
Dr Mikołaj Dziurzyński received funding of 49,280 PLN for the project titled “Regulation and biosynthesis of indole-3-acetic acid in bacterial–fungal consortia.”
The project aims to examine how Paraburkholderia bacteria and Umbelopsis fungi cooperate in producing indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), an important plant hormone. By combining transcriptomics with metabolic modelling, the project will determine how interactions between the partners influence IAA biosynthesis and what mechanisms enable this cooperation. The results will help us understand the metabolic basis of IAA production in bacterial–fungal consortia and identify potential targets for developing sustainable bioinoculants that support plant growth.
We sincerely congratulate both researchers on obtaining funding and wish them valuable results and success in obtaining funds for future projects!
