The Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, at the 29th Science Picnic

On 13 June 2026, the 29th Science Picnic of Polish Radio and the Copernicus Science Centre, named after Professor Łukasz Turski, took place at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw. The Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw could not be missing from this year’s event, held under the theme “Inspired by Life”.

In the LIFE Zone, students from the Faculty presented topics representing various fields of biology. Visitors could learn how microorganisms and invertebrates contribute to the natural purification of water, discover the uses of herbs at home, in gardens and in nature, and find out how mitochondria provide cells with energy. Participants could explore models, take part in microscopic observations, quizzes and puzzles, and learn about the basics of cell culture.

Activities related to biodiversity and the everyday applications of biological processes also attracted considerable interest. Participants discovered the role of microorganisms in the production of bread, cheese and other food products, learned about natural pigments, built simple water purification filters and created habitat models. They could also examine animal specimens and explore how their body structures have changed over the course of evolution.

There was also an opportunity to discover the fascinating world of parasites. Visitors could examine various species of ticks under stereomicroscopes, including both species occurring in Poland and exotic ones, and test their knowledge through specially prepared games and quizzes. Another attraction was the outdoor game “INSPIRED BY LIFE: THE MISSION OF THE MAD SCIENTIST”, in which participants helped reconstruct the mysterious Formula of Life by solving biological puzzles and challenges.

The Faculty of Biology booth was a place full of experiments, observations and scientific fun. The activities demonstrated that biology is not limited to textbooks and laboratories, but is present in our everyday lives, the environment around us, the food we eat and the human body.

The Faculty of Biology booth was organised by Patrycja Ściślewska, MSc, and Marcin Mazurkiewicz, MSc. Numerous students, staff members, volunteers and representatives of student scientific associations operating at the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, contributed to the preparation and delivery of the activities.
