Prof. Paweł Golik on synthetic biology at Copernicus Festival 2026

Prof. Paweł Golik from the Institute of Genetics and Biotechnology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, and the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, was a guest of Copernicus Festival 2026, whose theme this year was “Complexity”.

As part of the “Year in Science” series, Prof. Paweł Golik delivered a lecture titled “Synthetic Biology”, devoted to one of the most fascinating and, at the same time, most thought-provoking areas of contemporary biology. The starting point was the latest achievements in research on artificial life, including designing genomes “from scratch” and creating biologically active proteins that have no counterparts in nature.

During the lecture, Prof. Golik discussed the opportunities opened up by synthetic biology, as well as the challenges and risks associated with its development. Are we already able to create life? Where is the boundary between modifying organisms and designing new biological systems? And how can we responsibly develop technologies that may transform medicine, biotechnology and our understanding of life?
